Naxalism is a euphemism for a violent and militant armed battle against the state seeking ideological support from Marxism-Leninism and strategic alliance from Maoism. The Naxal Movement is the most dreaded and longest armed struggle in the history of independent India. What began as a peasant revolt in a remote West Bengal village of Naxalbari in 1967 has now spread to a large swath in the central and eastern parts of the country. In 2006 Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called the Naxalites "the single biggest internal security challenge ever faced by our country."
In terms of bloodshed and casualties, Naxal Movement is bigger than any other prominent insurgency, including militancy in the North-East and the separatist movement in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Naxal violence in the past five years alone has claimed the lives of 4,405 persons. The comparative figures are 4,324 and 4,136 for the North-East and J&K, respectively.
