Rural India is almost shining |
| |
Even as the US and G-20 countries struggle to revive their economies,
India’s rural heartland has done exceptionally well. Rural India is
almost shining, riding high on the increased disposable income,
development-driven government policies and enhanced consumer awareness.
Per capita income in rural India has grown by 50 per cent over the last
decade, mainly on account of returns from rising commodity prices and
improved productivity, along with development of basic infrastructure,
better information services, generation of employment guarantee schemes
and access to funding.
Synopsis of the Study
- Increase in disposable income due to many factors including
reducing share of agriculture in rural household income, rise in
non-farm income offering better purchasing power
- Changing
expenditure distribution patterns; identifying components in the
consumption basket on which rural families spend less compared
to their urban counterparts
- Strong political
impetus provided by the government apparent in renewed interest
to work for the betterment of the rural masses and willingness
to invest in education, health and infrastructure
- Sectors that benefit from rural
prosperity including FMCG, automotive, retail, telecommunication
- The phenomenon of
rural business process outsourcing (BPO) in which IT/IteS majors
like Infosys Technologies and Wipro are expanding back-office
operations to rural areas because of lower infrastructure costs,
moderate salary levels and low attrition rate
- The growth of agriculture as a result of positive trade and
investment policies, rising commodity prices and the strategy to
double growth; GDP growth streaming out of agriculture is four times
more effective in eliminating poverty compared to GDP arising
outside agricultural sector
- A look at the schemes which strengthen the core of
rural India including the flagship National Rural Employment
Guarantee Act, Bharat Nirman (build India) Rural Infrastructure
Development Scheme and major interventions in the health and
education sectors
- The role of rural and micro finance in providing
safe and reliable financial services, like credit, savings and
insurance
- The importance of Information and Communication technology to
reduce much of rural India’s age-old agonies, making it an
empowered, decision-making part of modern India
