Taliban in Pakistan & Afghanistan - India Pakistan Conflict

Asia News Agency

Talibanisation of Pakistan - Grave Threat to India and The Region

Taliban is resurgent in Afghanistan. It has established and consolidated itself in Pakistan where it struck a peace deal with the government that gave it control over the Swat valley. The US Defence Secretary Robert Gates says it perhaps over-reached itself by seeking to spread itself to Buner, 100 km from Islamabad. That remains to be seen. But its growing influence was enough for President Obama to call for a summit with leaders of Afghanistan and Pakistan to ensure effective implementation of his Af-Pak policy.

Many observers are already calling it the Pak-Af policy. The US considers the border areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan as the most dangerous place in the world – home to al Queda and the most violent terrorist groups. All of this has grave implications for India which has doubts over the current Pakistan offensive against the Taliban.

Asia News Agency has prepared, on request, a Special Study on the subject explaining and analyzing the following:

  • ROOTS OF MODERN MILITANT MOVEMENTS – WAHABISM

  • BIRTH OF TALIBAN IN AFGHANISTAN

  • RISE AND GROWTH OF THE PAK TALIBAN – TEHRIK-E-TALIBAN
(Its background; control over Buner and beyond (Punjab); imposition of Sharia law and exploiting socio – economic conditions and class conflicts)

  • SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TALIBAN TO PAKISTAN

  • PAKISTAN’S STRATEGIC PSYCHE
(Playing the jehadi card by Pakistan; the role of its army; and all of this resulting in the shift of radicalization from Afghanistan to Pakistan)

  • US MOTIVES AND CONCERNS
(Obama’s Af-Pak policy, including his talks with Karzai and Zardari; the manner of US dealing with the good and the bad Taliban; and finally, analyses of the US policy)

  • INDIAN CONCERNS
(Pakistan’s India fixation; its worries about the growing influence of Pakistani Taliban; India’s doubts on Pak seriousness in taking on the Taliban; linkages of the US Af-Pak policy with the Kashmir issue; and doubts on the regional approach of the US)

  • CONFLICTING INTERESTS OF INDIA AND PAKISTAN IN AFGHANISTAN

The comprehensive 16,000 + word study is available in hardcopy at a price of Rs 850.
